Abstract:
Traffic accidents are one of the principal causes of death in the United States and the chief cause for persons between the ages of five and twenty-four. Therefore, it has become of first importance to utilize the most effective and efficient means to reduce the number of highway deaths and injuries. To an increasing extent, people are looking to driver education as one of the most promising methods of dealing with this problem.

Joe Garrett, North Carolina’s Commissioner of Motor Vehicles, operates the State Highway Patrol and administers the state laws governing motorists and motor vehicles. In this article, Garrett discusses thirteen causes of motor vehicle accidents and fatalities. Some of the efforts to prevent highway fatalities include education campaigns, driver safety programs, and enhanced enforcement of drunk driving and speeding.
