Gun violence is one of the biggest social issues in the Triangle area. For some, Mother’s Day is about loss, not celebration. A photojournal shows the effects of gun violence on mothers through photographs of mothers who lost children with captions telling their stories of loss.

The new exhibit Sacred Motherhood: Mother-and-Child Representations form the Permanent Collection explores the symbolism of a woman caring for a child. The exhibit brings together 13 pieces of art from numerous cultures and spanning thousands of years. The exhibit attempts to show the multiple phases of motherhood - from pregnancy to the pain of separation through death.

Abstract:
The North Carolina Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) survey has been conducted since 1997 to help find out why some babies are born healthy and others are not. This report summarizes survey information and comments collected from mothers in 2004 and 2005. Topics were on prenatal care, folic acid use, breastfeeding, smoking, alcohol use, postpartum blues and depression, toxemia of pregnancy, Medicaid, and satisfaction with prenatal services.
