Campbell examines marijuana growing in North Carolina. Although it has not joined the ranks of other states where it is legal, estimates place the state's crop state at $670 million in 2006. This is higher than tobacco at $496.1 and cotton at $302.6 million and puts North Carolina sixth in the nation.

"Developing a thriving N.C. cannabis industry follows a crooked path." Up until it was outlawed in 1940, North Carolina produced enough hemp to export small amounts. In 2017, the state's Industrial Hemp Pilot Program brought back production. Policing continues to be a major issue.. For now, recreational marijuana remain illegal.

"The North Carolina Gneral Assembly is currently considering a bill entitled 'NC Compassionate Care Act'" which would legalize marijuana for 'medical' use in certain situations, including cancer, PTSD, AIDS, and more. But the term 'medical marijauna' is intentionally misleading." Currently, "Epidiolex" is the first and only FDA-approved drug developed directly from the marijuana plant.
