Krispy Kreme Doughnuts originated in Paducah, Kentucky in 1933 and later moved to Winston-Salem in 1937. Their popular doughnuts were once the state's best kept secret. In 1966, the company began expanding out of the Southeast and now delights doughnut lovers nationwide. Krispy Kreme boxes even appear in movies and on popular television shows, like NYPD Blue and ER.

Krispy Kreme, the Winston-Salem doughnut company, was privately held from 1937 till 2000, when it went public and began expanding its territory. Now in twenty-nine states, Krispy Kreme will open thirty-two new stores in Canada in 2001. Retail outlets are currently making three million doughnuts a day and in 2000 generated revenues of $300 million.

Daryl Brewster was named president and CEO of Winston-Salem-based Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. in March 2006. The company has fallen on hard times because of such mistakes as accounting irregularities and overzealous domestic expansion. As a result, company stock has decreased in value. Brewster's goal is to restore the company's reputation. He has helped revive other beleaguered food brands, including Planters nuts.
