Abstract:
If a slave had not run away, Union County might have had to use a log cabin as a jail for a good many years longer. Due the brutal treatment of the runaway slave, his master was condemned to death, but a plea released him upon paying a fine of $3,000. This allowed the Union County jail to build a brick structure in 1847 in the town of Monroe.
