Abstract:

North Carolina has the only slate mine company in the world at Mount Gilead. The Jacob's Creek Stone Co. operates outside of Denton and employees 75 people. The company provides slate to the North Carolina state school system, General Motors, the American Bar Association, and to several major cities such as New York and Saint Louis. The company started in 1945 under the McAulay family and now owns 500 acres on Mount Gilead.
