Abstract:
The 1994 Muslim Youth of North America East Zone Conference was recently held in Durham. 550 Islamic teenagers gathered to listen to mentors remind them what it means to be Muslim and its impact on their lives. The issues that affect all teenagers, but especially Muslim ones are detailed and described by presenters and participants.

The FBI recently asked for information about tenants at a Durham Apartment complex. Complex owner Matthew Flynn was questioned about four of his residents who were flagged by the FBI. Flynn turned over financial documents from the tenants to the FBI. Complex residents and members of the Muslim American Society in Raleigh discuss how the FBI’s surveillance programs have negatively affected their lives.

The number of Muslims in the Triangle-area is growing and four area Muslims provide a glimpse into their faith lives and the religion itself. They discuss the ideas that many have about their worship practices, family life, sexual roles, and their values which seem foreign and restrictive to many outsiders. Muhsinah Ali, Nazeeh Abdul-Hakeem, Sandra Harhash, and Hatim Mukhtar all contribute to the story.

Emil Kang and the Carolina Performing Arts are producing Sacred/Secular: A Sufi Journey. This year-long festival highlights the differences in the Islamic faith and explores the experience of living with a Muslim identity in the modern world. Performances include concerts, staged readings, plays, dance, and other media formats throughout the Triangle Area starting Friday September 29th through April 12th.

The political views of Republican Representative Sue Myrick of Charlotte are explored. Myrick has made comments that were offensive to many Muslims about their religion. Also examined is her advisory board membership on The National Council on bible Curriculum in Public Schools. Her support of an organization that is seen as a religious extremist group, but her offensive remarks about religious extremism suggest a double standard held by Myrick between Islam and Christianity.

Abstract:
Members from the Muslim American Society (MAS) of Raleigh recently met with Homeland Security, FBI, SBI, NC Highway Patrol, and other law enforcement officers. The meeting was a way for Muslims in the Triangle area to voice community concerns and grievances. This allowed the group a chance to speak out in a safe setting although a large part of the community is afraid to do so. The community expressed concerns about profiling, citizenship, political concerns.
