Tom Garcia, a seventeen-year veteran of the US Air Force, discusses why he and his wife Nancy have taken up beekeeping in Washington. Most of them \"revolve around sustainability and environmental protection of the bees.\" Almost a third of American crops depend on pollination and that crop value is estimated at $15 billion. Garcia is the founder of the Beaufort County Beekeepers Association.

Bee City USA is a program under the Center for Honeybee Research, a non-profit organization in Asheville. The program seeks to protect native pollinators and raise awareness about the importance of bees, populations of which have been shrinking as a result of pesticides and lack of nearby crop diversity.

A good sign for the production of honey and the pollination of crops, North Carolina has climbed near the top with the number of honeybee colonies in the state. Recovering from an all-time low in 1941, an increase of 15 percent over 1958 figures show over 210,000 colonies in the state.

In North Carolina beekeeping is a hobby that is rapidly growing in popularity among people who want to be more self-sufficient. Honeybees are also the most important pollinator for crops grown in North Carolina. This article provides insight from a local beekeeper, describes how bees make honey, and discusses current efforts to preserve bees throughout the state.

North Carolina benefits from having more than ten-thousand beekeepers, more than any state in the nation. The state also ranks among the top ten in number of beehives, and most of these belong to hobbyists with a passion for keeping bees. This article discusses the history of beekeeping, the importance of bees in pollination, and the production of honey.
