Abstract:

Established in 1911 as the 99th district in North Carolina, Hoke County was the second to last province founded in the state. Settled by Scotsmen and subjected to minor controversies during the Revolutionary War, Hoke County is currently known for the Army installation, Fort Bragg. Built on 176 acres purchased by the Federal Government in 1918, the new Army base diminished the land mass of the county from 414 square miles to 238. A small industrial base grew within the community, consisting of lumber, cotton mills, fertilizer companies, and a concrete block works. In addition, small scale agricultural ventures also help to sustain Hoke residents.
