Abstract:
Preservation easements, a legal right given by a property owner to a qualified organization to prevent changes, has been referred to as the best tax shelter in history. However, in North Carolina preservation, easements have not enjoyed as widespread use as in other parts of the east coast.

Abstract:
In 1985 the North Carolina Preservation Foundation accepted preservation easements on a number of historic structures. These easements are legal rights that one party has to protect the architectural and historical integrity of another party's property by restricting change.
