Abstract:

This nonprofit organization, established nearly a decade earlier, sustained success due to its celebration, education, and advocacy of life on two wheels for both urban and commuter cyclists. Events included coordinating community rides such as the Bike of the Irish. Lobbying for transportation policy changes yielded the Hominy Creek Greenway and the non-profit’s collaboration with the city council in the creation of Asheville’s Comprehensive Bicycle Plan.

Abstract:

As development intensifies and makes natural areas more scarce, greenways are becoming an indispensable aspect of cities in the state. Greenways provide havens from the necessary evils in large cities and allow citizens to escape for a spell.

Abstract:

The linear park, initiated by the Mecklenburg County Greenway Master Plan, currently covers 47 miles of trails and wildlife habitat. Motives to stretch mileage to 95 miles by 2030 include younger workforce segments wanting connectivity and businesses wanting to build around the greenway. Incentives include a positive impact on individuals’ health and the metro’s economic health. Statistics attesting the impact already made include a 600% population growth since 1998 and 5.1 million square feet of office space planned or under construction in central Charlotte.
