The daughter of a tobacco farmer, Ava Gardner was born on Christmas Eve, 1922, near Smithfield. She achieved movie stardom in such films as THE SUN ALSO RISES. The Ava Gardner Museum in Smithfield contains 100,000 mementos of her career.

Actress Ava Gardner was born in community of Grabtown, just outside Smithfield in Johnston County. It is noted Gardner never forgot her roots in the area and likewise her hometown never forgot her. A lifelong friend, Dr. Thomas Banks began a significant collection of Gardner memorabilia. The quest to showcase these materials began in the 1970s. a permanent home was found in 1981 and later permanent location in Smithfield in October 2000. The annual Ava Gardner Festival, celebrated the first weekend in October began in 2007.
