Abstract:
The Atkinson Milling Company, located on the Little River near Clayton in Johnston County, is one of the state's oldest grist mills still operating. Built in 1757 and rebuilt after a 1950 fire, the mill services a ten-county area.

"Flour Mill expansion highlights Johnston County's diverse economic landscape." Though the county has experienced tremendous growth relevant to pharmaceuticals, it remains heavily invested in agriculture and food processing. An example is the recent $28 million expansion of the state's largest flour mill, located in the Johnston County hamlet of Wilson's Mills. The operation is owned by Kansas City based Bartlett.
