Abstract:
Rural and city fire departments both have up-to-date equipment and well-trained men. Cities receive their equipment through tax funds and pay their firemen a salary; rural departments are an all-volunteer group from the community, and they raise their money for equipment through barbecue suppers, cake sales, and musical events. Mecklenburg, Forsyth and Rowan are three of the leading counties in rural fire protection.
