Heins Telephone Company, a small, family-owned firm headquartered in Sanford, serves about 16,000 customers with 30,000 telephones in Lee and Harnett Counties and in small areas of Chatham and Moore counties. It is the parent corporation of Heins Communications, a new independent interconnect company, or long distance phone service. James E. Heins, grandson of the founder, is company president and CEO.

James E. Heins is the third generation of a family known for its pioneering in the telecommunications industry. His father and grandfather founded Heins Telephone Company in Sanford in 1923. That company operates 20,000 lines in four counties (Lee, Harnett, Moore, and Chatham) and is state regulated. Three years ago Heins founded Heins Communications, Inc., a non-regulated company that specializes in sales, service and maintenance of private phone systems. The company had sales of $3 million in 1984 and forecasts sales of $5 million in 1985.

Hugh R. Perry and ten Sanford businessmen founded Lee Brick & Tile Company in Sanford in the early 1950s. Perry later bought out his associates, and the business still remains in his family's hands. The company occupies a twenty-acre site along with its shale pit. Lee Brick will make about 40 million bricks this year. North Carolina is second only to Texas in output.
