Abstract:

Champion International is a large economic anchor in western North Carolina. Two plants at Canton and Waynesville employ about 2,000 with average annual wages of $42,000, in addition to contributing over $3 million a year in taxes to Buncombe and Haywood counties. This article presents information on the company's $300 million dollar investment to protect the area's air and water quality.
