In 1892, the Populist and Republican parties joined to oppose the firmly rooted Democratic Party. This merger forced many Democrats from office and, in the 1898 election, the white supremacy Democratic platform led to a violent mob in Wilmington.

Durham’s mayoral race was originally set as Mayor Pro Tem Cora Cole-McFadden, a longtime council member and city employee, versus Steve Schewel, a four-year councilman, former school board member, and an activist. Recently, Cole-McFadden withdrew her mayoral candidacy. Two new mayoral candidates are former councilman Farad Ali and Pierce Freelon, a musician, professor, and entrepreneur.

Democrats did not do well in the 2012 elections in North Carolina. The reasons for the likely Republican victories began two years ago. The Republicans' 2010 victory happened as a national census ensured newly drawn voting districts, and from the large increase in campaign donations in support of Republicans. With the money and control of the map, Republicans easily kept control of state politics.

One of President Barack Obama’c campaign advisors John Verdejo describes his reaction to Obama’s victory in 2008 presidential election. Verdejo was one of North Carolina’s three whips at the Democratic National Convention.
