The tearing down of the bridge between Chimney Rock and Lake Lure in 2010 necessitated a way to keep the towns connected and protect the aquatic ecosystem. By 2013, a garden on cement, cited as the second of its kind in the country, was a vision turned reality named Lake Lure Flowering Bridge.

Proving quality hiking treks can be flat as well as uphill is Coastal Plain trails such as the Cedar Point Tideland Trail in Croatan National Forest. Here, hikers can find plants such as sea beans, possibly a yield of marshland and forest residing and colliding in their ecological co-existence.

Celebration of the 225th anniversary of the town’s founding was seemingly incomplete without recognizing the anniversaries for the founding of two of its preservation resources. Site of the Theatre founded in 1938, the Columbia Theatre Cultural Resources Center can also be called a museum, with its preserving a record of Columbia’s traditional lifeways. A nonprofit that helped found the Resource Center, Partnership for the Sounds also helps to preserve Inner Banks ecosystems through advocacy and educational endeavors.

Living at Linville Gorge’s cliff are plants revealing ancient ecosystems long unknown and trees a retired Appalachian State professor believes are a millennium old. Support for his perspective of cliffs, which include their ecological as well as geological aspects, is a profile of the Table Mountain Pine, in addition to plants like Rock Tripe Lichen and Mountain Golden Heather.
