"Led by a professor who sees himself as an 'accidental linguist,' a nonprofit program at NC State celebrates dialect diversity and shows that the way we speak is something to be embraced." Walt Wolfram is a linguist and director of the Language & Life Project at North Carolina State University. Wolfram has identified five main dialect regions in North Carolina; namely, Appalachian Highlands, Coastal Plain, Pamlico Sound, Virginia Piedmont and North Carolina Piedmont.
