Abstract:

Gustavo Perez Firmat, a “Cuban exile” living in the United States, discusses his parents move from Cuba to the U.S. to wait out the Castro regime. After decades waiting, Gustavo moved to North Carolina, where his two biggest influences were I Love Lucy and The Andy Griffith Show; one shows a fellow Cuban living in America, the other shows small-town North Carolina life.

Abstract:

A medical care program in America provided knee and hip surgery for Cubans not able to obtain these treatments on their native soil. Expressions of English and Spanish not always understood created a language barrier at times between the patients and surgical team. The nonverbal signs of surgery success, though, required no translation or interpreter.

Abstract:

UNC historians Lars Schoultz and Louis Perez have been studying United States history with Cuba. Schoultz analyzed unpublished archives from the CIA during the Bay of Pigs Invasion, which confirm plans for using U.S. troops in Cuba. Perez documented metaphors that U.S. policymakers and politicians have used to depict Cuba as a country needing to be saved. Both authors agree that the U.S. should engage with Cuba and end the embargo.
