The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum and the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum, both under construction, will reflect, when completed in 2003, the heritage of coastal Carolina. Both are located on Harkers Island. Core Sound will celebrate the art of decoying, and the Graveyard Museum will contain maritime history represented by the shipwrecks.

The Core Sound Waterfowl Museum celebrates the living traditions of decoy carving, boat-building, and fishing through the documentation and preservation of this Down East community’s cultural history. This article discusses the history of the museum and highlights several new exhibits. This May, the museum moves into its new building at Shell Point on Harkers Island, North Carolina.

Similar to the “Flat Stanley” project, author Keith Hendrickson set out to create a traveling decoy to send to duck hunters all over the country. Bald Pete, as the decoy has been called, has been used on hunting trips in all 50 states as of his fourth season abroad, and has even been out of the country to Canada, Mexico, and Iceland. He now resides in The Core Sound Waterfowl and Heritage Center.
