Carolina Performing Arts honors composer Philip Glass through six concerts that encompass all facets of his work. Glass has composed classical music scores for operas, symphonies, and movies. He has also collaborated with various musicians and artists, most notably, David Bowie.

The North Carolina Symphony celebrates its seventy-fifth anniversary this season. In a tribute to the symphony, six of the state's composers contributed works to a new series entitled POSTCARDS FROM NORTH CAROLINA. The composers--Paul Elwood, Kenneth Frazelle, the late Roger Hannay, Stephen Jaffe, Anthony Kelley, and Robert Ward--were commissioned to write four-to-six minute pieces that convey what the North Carolina experience means to them. Sauls discusses the compositions.

William Grant Still was the most celebrated African American classical composer in the United States, and had a profound influence on musicians. In honor of his one-hundredth birthday, arts organizations throughout North Carolina are celebrating Still and his music. The Eastern Music Festival featured lectures and performances of Still’s works.

Stephen Jaffe is a composer who teaches composition at Duke University and directs the Encounters with the Music of Our Time series. Jaffe was recently awarded the Creative Arts Citation from Brandeis University for his “eloquent and individual voice” as a composer. A composition of his will premiere in Alice Tully Hall this summer and a broadcast performance of Jaffe’s will be featured on local public television. Jaffe enjoys his work at Duke and looks forward to composing his next piece during an upcoming sabbatical.

Raleigh native Lamar Stringfield is a composer and conductor and has won a Pulitzer Prize for his work. He was appointed conductor of the first state-supported orchestra in the nation, the North Carolina Symphony, when it organized in 1932.
