Abstract:
In recent years, local choreographers have made a lot of work about the challenges of maintaining individuality in an artistic community and in society generally. In Echo, a collaboration between dancer-choreographer Justin Tornow and visual artist Heather Gordon, different levels of identity are explored. Tornow splits the same performance, presented differently, across several spaces within the 21c Museum Hotel in Durham.

Modern dance icon Paul Taylor began commissioning new works for the first time in his company’s sixty-two-year history, bringing in the talents of choreographers Larry Keigwin and Doug Elkins. Keigwin’s “Rush Hour” and Elkin’s “The Weight of Smoke” will premiere at the American Dance Festival in Durham.

William Forsythe is a choreographer and one of the most influential creators across all of dance. Influenced by mathematics and physics, Forsythe calls his choreographic components algorithms and modalities. One Flat Thing, reproduced with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, is part of an evening of Forsythe’s work at this year’s American Dance Festival in Durham.

Cunningham is one of the greatest creative forces in American dance and had a profound influence on modern dance. He died in 2009. The company he founded is on a farewell tour and will cease to exist after December 2011.

Called by some the world's greatest dance festival, the American Dance Festival performs for seven straight weeks in June and July at Duke University. Here the world's leading modern dance companies come to introduce new works and showcase older modern works. Several North Carolina choreographers are profiled, including Autumn Mist Belk, Christina Tsoules Soriano, Courtney Greer, Jess Shell, and Amy Beth Schneider.

Clay Taliaferro is an artist-in-residence at Duke University, world-class dancer, and choreographer. While Clay has accomplished many successes, he struggles with prejudice against the gay community.
