Jim Jorgensen, professor and chair of the chemistry department, developed the capillary electrophoresis technique to separate small-volume samples inside tiny capillary tubes. Jorgensen’s lab is using the technique to identify and map individual proteins.

Chemistry professor Gary Pielak is the first UNC scientist to win a National Institutes of Health Pioneer Award. The award will fund him to research the spatial structure of proteins, and develop equipment to measure the proteins in various types of cells.

Thanks to a noted wood chemist at North Carolina State College--Dr. Alfred J. Stamm--a great warship is being restored after 334 years of Stockholm Harbor. The development of polyethylene glycol as a stabilizing agent for wood is also being used by woodworking shops to create decorative objects.

Bob Parr is a professor of chemistry and pioneer in the development of density functional theory in quantum mechanics. His most significant contribution was the 1988 LYP paper, named after the authors Lee, Yang, and Parr. The LYP paper solved a huge problem in theoretical chemistry and made much more accurate calculations possible.
