One of North Carolina’s most active developers, Beacon Partners is a big beneficiary in the booming demand for office space in denser and less suburban neighborhoods. RailYard is their biggest project to date. Established in 1989 by Pete Lash and Ed Weisiger, Jr., the company was the first to bring in new mid-rise office space in Charlotte’s south End neighborhood, a hot spot for craft breweries and apartments for younger audiences.

Entrepreneurs transformed the state's industry in the 19th-century. Charlotte's D.A. Tompkin's entrepreneurial endeavors included founding the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER and developing the cottonseed oil industry. Edward Dilworth Latta, also from Charlotte, founded the Charlotte Trouser Company, opened the E.D. Latta and Brothers clothing store, and was president of the Charlotte Consolidated Construction Company.

Colonel E. B. Watson is chairman and chief executive officer of Charlotte-based Security Forces, Inc., the largest privately-owned security agency in the southeast.
