His Self-Help Federal Credit Union’s frequently lends to individuals and companies labeled risky by traditional banks. Self-Help has built a national reputation for working with low- and moderate-income borrows, investing in communities, and leading research and lobbying efforts to fight predatory lending. Eakes’ history, philosophy, and banking practices designed to help ignored communities are profiled.

New Century Bank South recently merged with New Century Bank in Fayetteville, and CEO Bill Hedgepeth believes it will help the bank become more efficient and profitable. New Century has ten branches and continues to be competitive. In 2007 the bank was ranked second in North Carolina in the United States Small Business Administration’s Top Community Bank category.
