Thomas Samuel Ashe is being honored with a highway historical marker. Ashe was a practicing lawyer and legislative member of both the United States Congress and the Confederate States of America Congress. Ashe failed to win his gubernatorial race against William Holden in 1868, but remained active in public life until his death in 1887.
The recent bicentennial celebration in Anson County has brought to mind interesting and prominent characters of past days, among them Judge Thomas Samuel Ashe and his brother Doctor Edmund Fontaine Ashe of Wadesboro.
