This is a narrative of how Martha Walker Trent and her family survived the Civil War and later bought the McLean House, at Appomattox Court House. The first battle of the Civil War and the final surrender took place on this land. She sold the McLean House, to a Northern man, who took it down to move, but never did.

This is the story of Lula McLean’s Rag Doll, stolen from the McLean House, Appomattox Court House, where Gen. Robert E. Lee signed the surrender. The rag doll was a ‘Silent Witness’ to the Surrender and eventually wound up in the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park in 1992.
