Thousands of North Carolinians take great delight in Charles Whedbee's books about the Outer Banks. In this NEW EAST interview, Blansfield talks with Whedbee about his childhood days at Nags Head, his writing, and his deep ties to the people and legends of the Outer Banks.

Charles Harry Whedbee (1875-1945) was Greenville’s chief district court judge who dedicated much of his time to preserving Outer Banks folklore. This article presents his life history and accomplishments, one of which was drinking from Blackbeard’s skull.

"When the sun sets on long days at the beach, families still reach for Charles Harry Whedbee's beloved Outer Banks legends and spooky stories, years after the raconteur of Nags Head put them to paper." Though a Greenville resident, Whedbee was especially fond of Nags Head. His uncle owned one of the 13 original cottages there. As a writer, Whedbee was quite proficient in blending the real and made-up in his stories, many of which he shared on the popular morning television program, Carolina Today.
