Along Currituck Sound is a grand estate formerly known as the Whalehead Club. The article describes the history of this notable home from its inception to its current use as a private home. Built by railroad tycoon, it reportedly cost $360,000. The extravagant home, located in a remote area, has strong ties with local fishing industry. A lighthouse is located on the property behind the house to guide commercial fisherman, who are working around this opulent palace built on the sound.

Abstract:
A grand estate known as the Whalehead Club stands along Currituck Sound in the shadow of Corolla Lighthouse. The article describes the history of this notable home from its inception to its current use. Built by railroad tycoon, Edward Collings Knight Jr. and his second wife Marie-Louise Josephine LeBel, who was wealthy in her own right, it reportedly cost $383,000, about $4.3 million in today's money. The house was completed in 1925. The extravagant home, located in a remote area, has ties with local fishing and fowl hunting industries.

Two elaborate, privately owned hunt clubs, the Currituck Shooting Club at Nags Head and the Whalehead Club at Corolla, are reminders of waterfowl hunting times that began in 1857 and lasted into the 1980s. Both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Currituck Club is the oldest active hunt club in North America. The Whalehead Club is now a museum and is owned by Currituck County.
