Arthel \"Doc\" Watson of Deep Creek has been blind since the age of one. This has not prevented him from making music for over fifty years. His flatpicking style has brought a new role to the acoustic guitar in American folk music. He is one of the state's best-known, award-winning musicians.

Doc Watson began making music in 1935 on a $12 Stella guitar. Today at 77, the five-time Grammy Award winner is semi-retired, but stills finds time from home chores to perform for nationally and locally. Watson discusses his style of playing and what he has learned over the years.

Blind from birth, Doc Watson rose from the obscurity of his Deep Gap community to international acclaim as a folk musician. He is acknowledged by many as the fastest guitar picker in the world. He has recorded sixteen albums and appeared on many others with other musicians. In this TAR HEEL interview Watson discusses disco music, politics, the uncertainties of the music business, and his impressions of a Concorde flight.
