Abstract:
The author met Link Shehan, a man who can locate well springs using a forked stick that ‘vibrates’ when it is near a source of water. He is known as a Diviner by locals in Polk and Henderson counties.

Abstract:
North Carolina is the home of several \"water witches,\" whose power in locating wells and underground streams is mysterious. Both men and women have been known to possess this ability, although no one has ever been able to explain it. It is believed that the term \"water witch\" is derived from \"water withe,\" referring to the withe, or switch which the seeker after water holds in their hands.
