The Herring Club, a social club in Washington, North Carolina, is a fellowship group centered on socializing and fish fries. It began in the late 1940s with a group of volunteer firemen and still continues today. Although some of the traditions have shifted, the purpose of the group remains the same.

The connection between a well known area of the Outer Banks and Beaufort County's capital was created physically. For many decades, ferries like the Bessie Virginia transported good between “Little Washington” and area known for its connection to Roanoke’s lost colony. It was also created emotionally, in the bonds between people interdependent on each other for survival.

It was named in honor of George Washington 14 year before the creation of the nation's capitol. In 1969, the town began a major urban renewal project that included the present Stewart Parkway.

After admiring the historic architecture of the town and visiting with local lore keepers, Darre fell in love with Washington. After she moved to Washington to restore a historic building downtown, her mother also retired to Washington, or \"paradise\" as she calls it.
