Although a Raleigh native, John Fear's youth in New Bern put him on the path to being a coastal scientist. Fear fueled his coastal curiosity through academia, field research, resource management, research administration and now as the Deputy Director of North Carolina Sea Grant and the Water Resources Research Institute of the University of North Carolina System.

Michael P. Voiland, assistant director for research and development at Cornell University, is the new director of North Carolina Sea Grant. He succeeds Roland G. Hodson, who is retiring June 30, 2006. Voiland has held a number of positions for the past thirty years in New York's Sea Grant and Land Grant programs, including Great Lakes program coordinator and associate director and extension program leader for New York Sea Grant.

Ronald Hodson came to North Carolina in 1973 to work as a research associate in the fledgling North Carolina Sea Grant program. He is retiring in 2006, after thirty-three years service. He has been the program's director since 1998. Moser looks at his career.

The University of North Carolina Sea Grant Program has made substantial contributions to the state’s coastal resources, marine education, research, and economy. Sea Grant has also worked with commercial fishermen, helping them to develop new and improved technology for handling nets, crab pots and other fishing gear. In return, there have been increases in fish harvests and profits.
