Opening a door for a better future was OpenDoors of Asheville. Connecting at-risk children with customized educational and enrichment opportunities, the nonprofit organization offered tutoring, sporting events, and music and art lessons. Such activities can nurture talents overlooked by an educational system focusing on prospective behavioral problems and disciplinary issues.

Abstract:
Project HEART, High Expectations for At-Risk Teens, is in its 10th year placing tutors in schools and programs throughout eastern North Carolina. Students at East Carolina University participate in this AmeriCorps program, the only one of its kind in the state, to help at-risk youth excel in education in hopes they will bring back their knowledge and skills to their home communities.
