The Chatham Manufacturing Company sustained the town of Elkin and provided employment for over one-hundred years. The company opened in 1877 and produced textiles, including blankets, flannel clothing, and knitting yarns, but they are most famous for blanket manufacturing. As a successful business, Chatham cared for its community providing jobs and building vital institutions such as a hospital and a YMCA.

Founded in 1877 in Elkin, Chatham Manufacturing Company is one of the oldest textile mills in North Carolina. Alan L. Payne became the eighth CEO in the company's history when he was appointed in August 1985. He is only the third CEO who does not bear the founder's, Alexander Chatham's, surname. We the People of North Carolina magazine features Payne in its Businessman in the News section.

Robert Chatham is the fourth generation of his family to work in the Chatham Manufacturing Company, which his great-grandfather founded in 1877. He is featured in We the People of North Carolina magazine's Businessman in the News. The company employs over 3,000 people at plants in Elkin, Charlotte, and Eden. Fabric for furniture upholstery is Chatham's top product, with blankets and auto upholstery ranking second and third.

Founded in 1877 in Elkin, by the late Alexander Chatham and his brother-in-law Thomas L. Gwyn, Chatham Blanket Mills, now Chatham Manufacturing Company, is one of the oldest textile mills in North Carolina. The original plant had 284 looms and a capacity of 80,000 pairs of blankets per week. Chatham blankets are known world-wide today.
