Raleigh native Ally Baker is ranked number one among 14-year-old tennis players in the country. She is also at present the highest-ranked female player to come out of the state. To improve her skills and have a chance at a tennis career, Baker recently moved to Boca Raton, Florida, to attend the Chris Evert Tennis Academy.

Once deemed an elitist sport only popular in the northeast and midwest, tennis has gained popularity in southern states as well due to several factors including exposure from television, addition of courts at public recreational facilities, and the opening of racquet clubs in mountain resort towns in western North Carolina.
