Abstract:
The Stedman Incentive Grant, worth $5,000, assists non-profit organizations in efforts to save endangered architecturally and historically significant property. Asheville's historic Hopkins Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, designed in 1910, received the 1996 Stedman award. The congregation, which once considered demolishing the building because of its structural problems, is now developing fundraising and preservation strategies. The church will use the Stedman Grant to stabilize the roof and the internal framing of the sanctuary floor.

The Stedman Incentive Grant, which is worth $5,000, assists non-profit organizations in their efforts to save endangered architecturally and historically significant property. The Caswell County Historical Association received the grant in 1998 for their work in ensuring proper restoration of the Caswell County Courthouse. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Stedman Incentive Grant assists non-profit organizations in efforts to save endangered architecturally and historically significant property. The Gates County Historical Society received the 1991 award. The Gates County Courthouse, built in 1836 and used until 1976, was slated for demolition until the society rescued it to reuse it as a library, museum, and cultural center. The society will use the grant to assist in restoration of the courthouse's roof and guttering.

The Stedman Incentive Grant assists non-profit organizations in their efforts to save endangered architecturally and historically significant property. The Latham House Foundation, Inc., of Plymouth, received the 1992 award. The foundation purchased the Latham House in 1981 and has been working since then to restore it. The house was built in 1850 by politician Charles Latham. The foundation will use the grant to complete work to open the first floor.

The Stedman Incentive Grant assists non-profit organizations in their efforts to save endangered architecturally and historically significant property. The Sandy Level Community Council in Surry County received the 1999 award for saving the 1885 Satterfield House. The council had to resolve problems in the African-American community, where the house is located, and deal with resistance from Mount Airy over extending sewer lines to the house. Proposed users for the house include a center for neighborhood meetings and a police sub-station.

The Stedman Incentive Grant assists non-profit organizations in their efforts to save endangered architecturally and historically significant property. The Dubois School alumni received the 2000 award for their efforts to save their school. The school opened in 1922 in Wake Forest for African-American students. Abandoned in 1989, the building has deteriorated. The Stedman grant will help in repairs that will make the building into a community center.

Zion Church in Edenton received the 2002 award. Built in 1897, the church is \"one of the oldest buildings of African American heritage still standing in North Carolina.\" The grant will be used to defray expenses \"for termite control and treatment and to underwrite additional fundraising initiatives.\"

The Old Baldy Foundation, formed in 1985 to save the deteriorating 1817 Bald Head Island Lighthouse, is the 1988 recipient. The grant not only helps with the financial need of the project, but also recognizes \"their monumental effort to rescue this endangered vestige of maritime history.\"

The Friends of the Page-Walker Hotel in Cary are the 1985 award winners. The structure is the only remaining building associated with the town's founder, Frank Page. The award will assist in restoration costs.

This house, dating from the 1830s, is the oldest remaining frame house in western North Carolina.

The Stedman Incentive Grant, worth $5,000, assists non-profit organizations in efforts to save endangered architecturally and historically significant property. Save Historic Lowe's Grove, a grass-roots citizens group, received the 2003 Stedman Incentive Grant for its work toward saving the historic Lowe's Grove School in Durham. Established in 1901, the school is Durham's first and only remaining farm life school.
