Abstract:

Wilmington's St. John's Museum of Art is a complex of three historic buildings - St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Bunch-Cowan House, and St. John's Lodge. It houses around 700 works and specializes in the state's art. Recently the Bruce B. Cameron Foundation donated $4 million to design a new museum, with 4 1/2 million to be raised for construction.

Abstract:

Architect Charles Gwathmey of New York is the designer of the new 42,000 square foot St. John's Museum of Art in Wilmington. A $4 million gift from the Bruce B. Cameron Foundation and an eight-acre site worth $2 million, donated by the Cameron children, made it possible. There is still $4.5 million to be raised. Completion date is set for the year 2000.

Abstract:

St. John's Masonic Lodge in Wilmington, built in 1804, has housed the St. John's Museum of Art since 1964. Newly added to the museum are the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and the Cowan school. The church is a three level galley housing the gallery, and the school has been converted into teaching studios and an administrative loft. The lodge is being renovated and will house the permanent collection.
