A look at the culture and history of the Girls' Boarding School, founded in the Moravian settlement of Salem, North Carolina, focusing on the impact that the decline in keeping to a communal lifestyle and the changes brought on by the increase in area population had on the school and its buildings' architecture.

The contributions of ministers’ wives have traditionally been downplayed by historians. Acknowledging Anna Burwell’s efforts as a minister’s wife include crediting her fulfillment of gender role duties while operating a girls’ academy to help her husband support their family.

The author interprets a set of letters belonging to Rev. John Jacobson from a ten year period covering Jacobson's role as inspector and principal of the Salem Academy. Most letters are addressed to Jacobson from parent's hoping to send their daughters to the school, though a few letters are personal correspondence between Jacobson and his wife. Letters reflect the school's growing reputation and population with seeking enrollment from South Carolina, Alabama, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Arkansas.
