The Umstead 100, Raleigh's very own ultramarathon held in April, is a 12.5-mile loop around Umstead State Park that participants repeat eight times. The terrain varies from gravel and dirt paths to a little bit of pavement along hills and trails. It's a race often undertaken by runners making the leap from fifty to one hundred miles, and that leap takes preparation, or at least a different mind-set.

Paul James “Hardrock” Simpson was born on September 2, 1904, in Guilford County. During his lifetime he ran over 160,000 miles and became a running icon. Hardrock began running as a high-school athlete in 1927. By 1934, he had run across the United States twice and had won the $1,000 Montreal-Quebec and return race. A graduate of Elon College, Hardrock worked as a postal carrier. He ran his entire life and spent each birthday running as many miles as he was old.

Julie Shea is a track and cross-country running star for North Carolina State University. She has broken multiple records and received several honors, including the first woman to win the Atlantic Coast Conference athlete of the year award. Upon graduation, Shea plans to expand her talents to running marathons and attending graduate school.
