Led by durable goods, like appliances, cars, and trucks, retail sales rebounded statewide to $78 billion in 1994, compared to $71.2 billion in 1993. However, weak apparel sales and new competition hurt chain stores like Cato's and Family Dollar Stores.

Mack's Stores, Inc., a variety chain store, began operations in Sanford in December 1923. Today, Mack's operates ninety-six stores in the North and South Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia. The company employs over 1,600 and projected sales for 1977 are expected to exceed $45 million.

Abstract:
In 1962 the Record Bar was a single mom-and-pop store in a dying section of downtown Durham. By 1982, it had grown into the second-largest national retail chain in the record industry with sales in 1981 of $65 million. The retail chain has 136 stores in twenty-eight states.
