P. H. Rose created a family business that grew into a retail giant. He started in 1915, in Henderson, opening stores that would eventually bear the name Rose's. During the chain's heyday in the 1960s and 1970s sales grew from $54 million to over $500 million.

Employment is high in North Carolina; consumer prices are low; and retail sales are up. For the fiscal year ending June 1999, retail sales were up $126.3 billion or 8 percent from 1998. Retail areas posting gains included department stores, up 13.4 percent to $2.3 billion; discount stores, up 7.4 percent to $7.1 billion; and auto sales, up 13.4 percent to $7.8 billion.

After seeing an early business venture fail, P. H. Rose met success with his store in Henderson, which opened in 1915. From there it grew into a chain of stores, called Rose's, now numbering 68 in North and South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee.

A new system of merchandising is here. Although a long way from the time of the peddler and his pack, it adopts the same principles. With the advent of modern highways in North Carolina, Meyer's Department Store in Greensboro decided to experiment with a traveling store. With a second hand car and trailer, the Meyer's Shop on Wheels has been a success, especially around Christmas time.

Lucius H. Harvin, III, is president and CEO of Rose's Stores, a firm founded by his grandfather, P. H. Rose, in 1915. He is only the fourth person to lead this family-owned retail chain of 240 stores which employ around 13,000 people in thirteen southeastern states.
