Abstract:
Chemical engineer William Vizuete and his colleagues at the UNC Gillings School of Public Health designed and developed an innovative air quality testing system. Their new device can detect air pollutants with much higher accuracy than traditional systems. The device is patented and will be commercially available through their startup company, BioDeptronix.

Ozone is a by-product car traffic and Raleigh’s traffic situation creates a lot of ozone pollution. North Carolina is ranked 42 out of 50 states in environmental quality according to EPA and is cited as frequently violating federal standards for ozone and carbon dioxide emissions. More cars on the road in Raleigh and a lack of public transportation are creating to the problem. This problem will negatively affect the health of Wake County residents.

Environmental pollution and hazardous waste remain a problem at the local, state, and national levels. Much pollution is legal because of state and federal permits granted to businesses. Still, there are businesses that violate the law. The INDEPENDENT examines eight Wake County pollution sources. The facilities profiled were selected using three main criteria: the number or egregiousness of the violations; proximity to population centers; and fines assessed since 2003.
