Abstract:
Polk was born in Anson County in 1837. He was a graduate of Davidson College. During the Civil War he served with the 26th and 43rd North Carolina Regiments, until he was elected to the state legislature in 1864. After the war he was a newspaper editor, agrarian leader and the state's first Commissioner of Agriculture. He later served as president of the National Farmers' Alliance. Polk died in 1892, just before he would have been nominated for the Presidency of the United States.

Several noted Anson County gentlemen are discussed for their great deeds toward their community and abroad. Listed among them are Dr. Hugh Hammon Bennet, considered the \"father of soil conservation.\" Also mentioned, among many others, is Colonel Leonidas LaFayette Polk, the first commissioner of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and leader of the National Farmers Alliance.

Colonel Leonidas L. Polk was a great North Carolinians who rendered invaluable service along many lines. In the days of Reconstruction, Polk sponsored a provision for the establishment of a State Department of Agriculture. He also introduced the resolution providing a committee to consider the feasibility of establishing an institution for the higher education of women.

North Carolina farmers in the late 19th century had to overcome potential obstacles to their success including the credit system, the tariff system, price-controlling trusts, the railroads, and the American financial system. In response, agricultural organizations formed in 1887 inspired by Col. L.L. Polk's weekly paper, \"The Progressive Farmer.\" The largest organization was the Farmer's State Alliance of North Carolina.
