In this article the author is discussing the implications from made from scratch school lunches to the more modernized premade and heated up school lunches. One of the debates was that finding funding for school lunches was hard because it would normally cost $2.91 to make a single school lunch, the student paid $2.60 for the lunch, and if it was a free lunch the state would only pay back $2.50. The author argues that this impacts students from lower economic backgrounds because these students normally eat through free lunch programs. Lastly, the author discusses that the two major reasons that school lunches became a thing was to teach children about nutrition but to also Americanize immigrant children.

In this article the author is discussing a new policy being implemented across the UNC system. The new policy was put in place by the UNC Board of Governors and this new policy stated that if any protests on campus disrupt or hinder a speaker, meeting, or class, sanctions can be put on the protesters. This can include suspension, banning from campus, and expulsion. Many professors and students alike disagree with this new policy and have petitioned to get it removed.

In this article the author is discussing the accomplishments of Mary Fisher Harris DeVane towards the African American community in New Bern. Mary was considered to have many different jobs in the community such as owning a beauty school, beauty salons, a taxi service, and did brokerage for sleep-in-maids and mid-wives. As a young African American Mary had to deal with Jim Crow laws, segregation, and having constitutional rights taken from her. Regardless Mary was considered to be a very intelligent and passionate woman. Mary strived to help empower and rise up her African American community.

In this article the author is discussing the first North Carolina Provincial Congress of 1774. This congress was made up of seventy-one delegates who were elected from 36 counties. On the 27th of August of 1774 the delegates drafted their resolutions to be sent to King George the third. These resolutions were to be called The New Bern Resolves.

This article’s main focus is on the U.S. Revenue Cutter Pamlico which was later named the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Pamlico. The first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton believed that a robust process of collecting revenue was important for the early nation. In the first rendition of this program was the Revenue-Marine which was latter name the Revenue Cutter Services. These were U.S ships tasked with collecting and transporting the nations revenue. One of the first ships that was a Revenue Cutter was the Diligence.

In this article the author is discussing the perspective of Tom Wenger, 72-year-old soccer player, of how Durham has very few soccer fields compared to their large population. This perspective can be heard from other resident soccer players from local and national teams. The argument is that Durham should double the amount of soccer fields so that a larger portion of the population will have a field to play on. Right now there are nine fields to play on but some believe that that number should be twenty-three fields.

The main argument made by the author is that the women that get the proper healthcare have fewer child deaths. The author states that research shows that mothers that have proper prenatal care have a lower chance of having infant death. In North Carolina it is still risky to have childbirth because too many women do not have access to proper prenatal care. The author states that this can be remedied if North Carolina expands Medicaid. Statistics show that infant mortality rates in the state was 753 to 895 per year over the past decade. Rates have not really declined since 2007. One in five women of reproductive age reported to not have health insurance. Uninsured women do not have the same resources and counseling like their insured peers.

In this article the author is discussing the events of the mass shooting on Valentine’s Day. The author talks about how Wayne LaPierre, executive director of the NRA, argues that we need guns to protect the people from bad guys and that the left are trying to take their guns away. During this the victims of the shooting are begging for lawmakers to create stricter gun laws. The author states that people think that will this mass shooting help change the minds of lawmakers to put stricter gun laws in place. Republican state representative Larry Pittman stated that we need to get over this gun craze and arm our teachers to protect schools. Which is a position that the NRA has advocated for many years.
