Abstract:

Sugarloaf Island sits across the water from Morehead City’s waterfront. First deeded to a local citizen in 1818, many residents in Morehead City today remember playing on the island as children. Fishermen used the small island to dry nets while the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers used the area to dump dredge spoil. In 2002, the town purchased the island as a city park and installed a foot path, boat dock, and rest rooms to increase accessibility and ease of use. Various species have been identified on the island and are recorded in an interpretive trail map.

Abstract:

Quick action by Nag's Head citizens in 1973 saved Jockey's Ridge from development. Today it is a 414-acre state park and National Natural Landmark. The sand dune, which is ninety feet tall and a mile long, is moving south at a foot a year.

Abstract:

The life of Archie Scarborough included a skill for square knot making. Much of the interview pivoted around this talent, what he also called macramé making. Traveling the conversation path included life landmarks such as contenting with the Park Service and helping to construct Wimble Shoals Lighthouse and a railroad in Kitty Hawk.
