The former owner of one of the nation’s largest Oriental rug distributorships proves success is measured in more than revenue. Proceeds from Zaki Khalifa’s business donated to Akhuwat will partly fulfill his mission: to help Pakistani children have a better quality life. The other part of his mission involves a new career path: teaching Pakistani children at Akhuwat schools.

Mary Ann Brittain, an outstanding science educator with the NC Museum of Natural Science, is the recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. It is one of the most prestigious awards presented by the Governor of the state and recognizes \"individuals with a proven record of extraordinary service to the state.\" Brittain's career covers 43 years of service.

The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is the state's highest civilian honor. Joe Hester, attorney and environmentalist, received the award this year for \"guiding the Clean Water Management Trust Fund as its chairman since its creation in 1996 to last year.\" During that time the trust has funded 314 water-quality improvement projects totaling over $258 million.

Abstract:
Two of the state's most dedicated public servants who have over thirty years of outstanding service--Bill Hughes, the Mayor of Murphy, and former Councilmember Chris Jones of Clemmons, received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. The award is for North Carolinians who served the state enthusiastically through their careers and communities. Jones was awarded his posthumously.
