Old Fort, in western McDowell County was the site of Davidson's Fort, built in 1776 as a defense against the Cherokee and as colonial American's westernmost outpost at the time. It became a major train depot in the late 1880s and has been reopened as a Railroad Museum and visitors center.

This article presents the host of museums that preserve North Carolina’s railroading heritage, which began in 1833. The museums include the Wilmington Railroad Museum, the North Carolina Transportation Museum, the National Railroad Museum, the North Carolina Railroad Museum and the New Hope Valley Railway, the Old Fort Depot, and the Piedmont North Carolina Railroad Museum.

Railroading in this case involved Pullman cars. Riding the rails the fashioned way was still possible through the National Railroad Historic Society and smaller model railroad groups. Highlighting the difference of the train experience not by Amtrak were factors involved with steam and coal power locomotives. Illustrating the uniqueness also was a description of a trip starting in Roanoke and ending in Greensboro.
