The Jones Award for Excellence in Coastal and Marine Graduate Study recognizes graduate students whose research \"promises to contribute materially to the development of new or improved approaches to coastal or ocean management.\" Six North Carolina students and the Town of Plymouth received the national award in 2012. Settlage lists the award winners and gives a brief summary of their research.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Ocean Exploration program has sponsored dives by a small submersible. The knowledge gained by this submersible is priceless and is a great teaching aid for teachers of all grade levels.

The ocean provides much for the planet, but there is still a great deal we do not know about the workings of 70 percent of the earth's surface, especially in its deepest parts. Therefore, scientists at North Carolina universities are leading the way, along with government agencies and entities such as the NC Museum of Natural Sciences are building momentum to explore into the vast reaches of the ocean.
